The Banned is from Ancaster, and soon, they may be banned from there as well. They've been playing together since the Sixties (they're older than they look). The style of music — or lack thereof — is fun, energetic, and hard to pigeon-hole: try Punk Zydeco or Cajun Rock.
Their original songs are created by Mike McCurlie and Ron Cole. They've been unjustly compared to Weird Al and Tom Waits (ouch!). Over the last 50 years or so, they've backed up or opened for local greats like Steve Strongman, Jack DeKeyser, and Daniel Lanois. They've worked just about every bar and coffee house in Ontario, including legendary venues like the El Mocambo and Festival of Friends.
The Banned generates a very unique sound with McCurlie on electric mandolin, Cole on accordion and keys, Joe Gravina on the skins, and Dave McHarg on bass. The Banned has great audience rapport, a cool list of songs, and a super powerful groove. Be warned: there will be dancing.
To be clear, they definitely don't do weddings… but they will consider divorces. They jump around on stage like crazy people, so you may witness a real-life cardiac arrest, since they're not spring chickens anymore. It's lots of fun and a wild ride, so don't miss out! This is no ordinary band… It's The Banned. You'll love them, and you might still go to Heaven.
“The 'Coach' is a British-style pub, and The Banned fills it up and keeps it rockin' all night long. They're good for my place since they aren't loud, but they have tons of energy!”
The Coach and Lantern, Ancaster
“I had my biggest Friday night ever when they played at my bar last month. They keep the audience entertained and the dance floor packed. Banned From Heaven rocks!”
Fisher's Pier 4 Pub, Hamilton
“Back in the Seventies, I played on the road with Mike and Ron, and compared to just about anyone I've worked with, these guys really know how to get the joint jumpin'!”
Producer (U2/Dylan, etc.), California
“Last year, Banned From Heaven played the bandshell at the Festival of Friends. They had the audience in the palm of their hands. Tons of great original songs... Hire the Banned right now!”
President, Festival of Friends
